Due to a new understanding about the biology of stroke, it is now known that there is a brief window of a few hours to address the conditions potentially devastating effects. Stroke is often referred to as a "brain attack"; the symptoms of stroke have the same alarming significance as chest pain does for heart attack.
Students in the UCLA Stroke Student Research Program play a key role in carrying out a new treatment paradigm. Stroke students are in the emergency room working with patients, doctors, nurses, and paramedics, 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, serving as the eyes and ears of the UCLA Stroke Team physicians. The students identify stroke patients as soon as they arrive in the ER and assist in providing them the best possible care as early as possible.
Stroke students know that "Time is Brain."
